The Island

Barbados is the southernmost island in the Caribbean and became independent from Great Britain and a member of the Commonwealth in 1966.
The home of the «Bajans» is only 23 x 33 kilometers wide, of volcanic origine and surrounded by coral reefs. The island has 254’000 inhabitants. About 60’000 tons of sugar–cane are being produced per year in some 1’500 small plantations. Barbados is also known for its Rum.
The North is quite hilly, and in the South and West are very long beaches with fine sand. Steep cliffs with big surf waves can be found in the East. The highest point is Mount Hillaby with 343 meters.

Climate

The yearly average temperature is between 21 and 26 degrees Celsius with mild trade winds from the northeast. At night temperatures do not vary much and there are hardly any differences between the seasons.
There is just enough rain for the abundant vegetation between June and November. Showers do not last very long and due to its privileged location the big seasonal storms are mostly bypassing Barbados.
The time difference to the CET is minus 5 hours in the winter and minus 6 hours in the summer. On Barbados there is no daylight saving time.
